Paid through Upwork? The EDF and FIRA for Indian freelancers

Upwork pays you, but the export is yours: if you need to file the Export Declaration Form, you file it with your bank, not Upwork. Which withdrawal method you use decides what proof of payment you get.

Last updated 09 Oct 2026 · Not legal or tax advice

The short version

  • Upwork doesn't file the EDF for you, and it isn't licensed by RBI as a payment aggregator.
  • Name Upwork in the EDF's third-party payer fields, since Upwork, not your client, pays you.
  • Direct to Local Bank arrives as a rupee credit; a wire arrives as a foreign inward remittance your bank can give a FIRA for.

How Upwork money reaches you

From the providers' published pages and, where marked, user reports, checked 04 Oct 2026. Providers change their banking partners and rules; check before you rely on this.

Direct to Local Bank (rupees)

  • How it arrives: A domestic rupee credit from the payment processor's partner bank.
  • Proof of payment: According to Upwork's help page as quoted by users, Upwork isn't a bank and doesn't produce the FIRC itself; on request it asks its payment processor for a FIRA or NOC, quoting the transaction ID, date and rupee amount.
  • Users report that no purpose code comes with these credits.

Wire transfer (foreign currency)

  • How it arrives: A foreign inward remittance at your own bank, which asks you for the purpose code (for example P0802 for software consultancy).
  • Proof of payment: Your bank's FIRA or e-FIRC. The cleanest route for the EDF.

Your Export Declaration Form

Exporters file the EDF with their AD bank within 30 days after the end of each month in which they invoiced a foreign client. Companies, LLPs and firms file. Individuals may not need to: on 7 October 2026 RBI said individuals don't have to report transactions of a personal nature, and its FAQ isn't out yet, so ask your bank (who files). See the full EDF guide or work out your due date.

  • List each invoice or contract payment to your client in Part 2B, at the full billed amount.
  • In the third-party payer fields, name Upwork and the relationship, for example "Payment platform engaged by the service recipient". Your bank decides whether to accept it.
  • One withdrawal can cover several contracts. Match each withdrawal to what it pays.
  • Keep the Upwork contract or offer, the transaction history and the FIRA, NOC or bank advice for each withdrawal.

Fees

Fees taken along the way mean less arrives than was billed. Record the difference and the reason. For invoices up to ₹10 lakh your bank can accept the lower amount on your own declaration.

Watch out for

  • If your bank can't match a Direct to Local Bank credit to your EDF, it can close invoices of up to ₹10 lakh on your declaration.
  • If you want a FIRA from your own bank for every payment, use the wire method.

Questions

Do I file an EDF for Upwork income?

Yes. Upwork doesn't file it for you. File the Export Declaration Form with your AD bank within 30 days after the end of each month in which you billed foreign clients.

How do I get a FIRA for Upwork payments?

For a wire to your bank, ask your bank. For Direct to Local Bank, Upwork's help page, as quoted by users, says Upwork isn't a bank and doesn't produce the FIRC; on request it gets a FIRA or NOC from its payment processor, quoting the transaction ID, date and rupee amount.

Who is the payer on my EDF?

Upwork pays you on behalf of your client, so name Upwork in the third-party payer fields with the relationship, for example "Payment platform engaged by the service recipient".

Do it in easylancing
