Stripe India exports, purpose codes and the EDF

Stripe India accepts payments from abroad for registered Indian businesses, not individuals, and is by invitation. Stripe doesn't file the Export Declaration Form; as a business, you file it with your bank.

The short version

  • Stripe India is invite-only, and the account can't be an individual: you need at least a sole proprietorship.
  • Stripe India is authorised as a domestic payment aggregator only; its cross-border application was returned by RBI in July 2024.
  • A Stripe account has a single purpose code, and P1099 isn't on Stripe's list.
  • Standard Chartered Bank emails a payment advice the same day each export payout is processed.

How Stripe India money reaches you

From the providers' published pages and, where marked, user reports, checked 04 Oct 2026. Providers change their banking partners and rules; check before you rely on this.

Stripe export payout to your bank

  • How it arrives: A rupee payout to your bank, labelled as an international payout.
  • Proof of payment: Standard Chartered's payment advice, emailed to your Stripe account email the same day. Stripe doesn't describe it as a FIRA.
  • Stripe needs the customer's name, billing address and a description of the service for each payment.

Your Export Declaration Form

Exporters file the EDF with their AD bank within 30 days after the end of each month in which they invoiced a foreign client. Companies, LLPs and firms file. Individuals may not need to: on 7 October 2026 RBI said individuals don't have to report transactions of a personal nature, and its FAQ isn't out yet, so ask your bank (who files). See the full EDF guide or work out your due date.

  • Stripe hasn't published guidance on the EDF. File with your own bank and attach the Standard Chartered advices; if your own bank is Standard Chartered, file there.
  • Ask Stripe support whether Standard Chartered reports the payments to RBI's export system in your name.
  • List each invoice in Part 2B at the full invoiced amount.

Fees

Stripe deducts its fees before the payout. Declare the full invoice amount and record what was deducted as a fee.

Watch out for

  • One purpose code per account: choose the code for your main service.
  • As an individual freelancer you can't open a Stripe India export account.

Questions

Can an individual freelancer use Stripe India for foreign payments?

No. Stripe's India exports documentation says the Stripe business can't be an individual; you need a sole proprietorship, LLP or company, and Stripe India is invite-only.

Does Stripe give a FIRA?

Standard Chartered Bank emails a payment advice the same day each export payout is processed. Stripe doesn't call it a FIRA; ask your bank whether it accepts it as proof.

Which purpose code does Stripe use?

The one you choose for your account; Stripe allows a single code per account, and P1099 isn't available.

Do it in easylancing
