What an export invoice from India must show

If you are GST-registered, your export invoice is a tax invoice under CGST Rule 46. Besides your name, address and GSTIN, a unique invoice number (up to 16 characters) and the date, it shows the client's name and address, the address of delivery and the country of destination, the SAC code (reportedly optional on invoices to foreign clients up to ₹5 crore turnover, but the EDF asks for it), the value, and place of supply "Outside India". If you export without paying IGST under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT), it carries the endorsement "SUPPLY MEANT FOR EXPORT/SUPPLY TO SEZ UNIT OR SEZ DEVELOPER FOR AUTHORISED OPERATIONS UNDER BOND OR LETTER OF UNDERTAKING WITHOUT PAYMENT OF INTEGRATED TAX". This generator adds all of that for you.

If you are not registered (and not required to register on other grounds), issue a plain commercial invoice: no GSTIN and no tax lines. GST invoice rules don't apply then, but showing the SAC code still helps, because the Export Declaration Form asks for it.

Billing a client in India? That isn't an export: a registered supplier issues a GST tax invoice with CGST and SGST, or IGST. Use the free GST invoice generator on our sister site FreeTools99.

After you send it

  • File the month's Export Declaration Form (EDF) with your bank within 30 days after the month ends.
  • The money must arrive within 9 months of the invoice date (12 months if invoiced in rupees).
  • Keep the FIRA or bank advice for each payment and match it to the invoice.
